The Edinburgh tournament 2008 Posted by lina on 2008-02-14 01:34:32
January 26-27 – time again for the legendary adventures of SKK at Edinburgh tournament in Scotland. Greedily for tournament experience the highly motivated SKK-debutants Catrin, Fritiof, Johanna, Richard, Sandy and Simon have been supported by the never-ending know-how of Angelika, Fredrik, Lina, Pierre and Robert as well as Hugo, SKK`s tournament mascot . Despite a deep-in-the-night arrival the team was hungry to win its first game. Challenged by the fighting and obviously more experienced players of Birmingham University SSK-defence was already working pretty well, but unfortunately you can only win a match with an own goal … However the result of 0-7 has only increased SSK motivation for the second match.
Not surprisingly SKK handed Edinburgh University 2 some serious troubles. Supported by SKK`s new recruited girl Kim of the Melmac Debalderin team (NED) and nice wide-shots the team was showing its future potential. That has led to a more than fair 2-2. Pushed by new energy after the lunch break SKK was ready for the show-down against the Manchester Warriors. Although the SKK rookies were playing on a higher level than ever before, the game has ended 1-5. But as the two last games on Saturday have shown as well, every well-analyzed defeat increases know-how. SKK team bonds have been enhanced indomitably during group phase and the first knock-out-match.
In the evening SKK team was enjoying consequentially traditional and very delicious Scottish food in a pub, before joining the Ceilidh (traditional Scottish dances) with all the other teams. A experience you shouldn`t miss.
After viewing some other games on Sunday morning, the scene has been ready for SKK: Edinburgh University 3 has been aware of its hard-but-fair fighting opponent. So it has been only the luck, which has helped the Scots to the marginal win. Even some - from the tournament-winning team -borrowed top-players have not been able to score against SKK.
The last game or SKK´s final countdown: Hungrier than ever before in the tournament, SKK players have anticipated Aston University. During the match SKK has given Aston a run for their money. After a marvellous wide-shot goal by one of SKK´s rookies the whole fan block has been dancing for minutes. All SKK players have been starting fireworks of commitment and proficiency, so the SKK team spirit has been shining brightly in the sports hall. Finally a 2-2 has been reached in the regular playing time. At the end SKK has beaten its opponent with a great 4-2 after penalties.
SKK team members have been celebrating their incredible days in another pub, followed by sightseeing or a shopping marathon on Monday morning. So the tournament has been once more successful step in SKK history. Don`t miss the next one.

The tournament in Stadskanaal Posted by david on 2007-11-13 18:48:21
The tournament in Stadskanaal turned out to be quite successful for Stockholm korfballklubb. The squad managed to reach two wins thereby claiming 5th place in the 8 team tournament. The final game was a genuine thriller, and in the end SKK managed to defeat the more experienced counterparts, Cardiff, with 11-10. The hosts in Stadskanaal ended up as the tournament champions, but SKK won a tight game against another Dutch team, which is quite a feat in korfball tournaments.

Eurobowl in Luxemburg Posted by david on 2007-05-16 14:51:44
The Eurobowl was played 12-13 May in La Coque arena in Luxemburg. The players in the swedish national team were: Emma Henningsson, Carola Bobic, Heather Main, Lina Leufven, Juliette Stam, Hanna Carlsson, Angelika Gustavsson, Stefan Henningsson, Robert Enskog, David Winks, Maitham Fateh Ali, Frederic Mangematin, Pierre Vergonet and Fredrik Lindberg.
The Swedish team got the toughest possible start in the Eurobowl, facing would-be winners Wales. The Swedish squad struggled valiantly, and after a Stefan’s historical first goal, the Swedes were only down one goal in half time. However, the Welsh squad, led by Great Britian veteran Dave Buckland, managed to capitalise on their opponents’ inexperience, producing a lot of free balls and penalties, thereby securing a 9-4 win. Wales went through the tournament undefeated. In the first game Lina scored on a distinct shot near the post, whereas Maitham scored on a free throw and Pierre executed a penalty perfectly.
The second game against Luxembourg ended up being the most exciting game in the tournament. The hosts took an early lead, before Juliette and Pierre could bring Sweden into the lead. After a period where the Swedish team missed a busload of chances and the Luxembourg players took advantage of their opportunities, Luxembourg led with 4 goals to 2, before Carola scored an important goal. After a new goal for the hosts, Juliette equalised the game, with two consecutive goals close to the post. The final Swedish goal was made by Pierre, bringing the score to 6-6. That draw gave Sweden the first point in an official game, but the golden goal overtime, brought no good news for the Swedish squad. Stefan had to leave the game and the tournament with an injured calf, and despise having dominated the overtime, the Swedes could score no goal, leading to a penalty shoot-out for the last point. The home team proved victorius in this lottery.
In the third game, Ireland was the opposing team. Once again the Swedish team were faced with a difficult situation in the beginning of the half, but after two goals by Juliette and a goal each for Frederic and Lina, the Swedes were only lagging with one before the start of the second half. In the second half, however, the Irish squad, led by crafty veteran Tom Brady, proved too difficult.
The first game of the second day was against our long time rivals Scotland. After a shocking 3-0 nothing start by the Scots, the Swedish started their come-back, with a couple of running-in shots by David, a notoriously ineffective goal scorer, and a couple of penalties, executed to perfection by Pierre. Once again, the second half was a disappointment, with Pierre as the sole scorer of the Swedish squad.
The last game of the tournament was against the most talented team, the technical and quick French squad. Despite goals from Lina, David, Fredrik and Juliette, the efforts proved futile as the French team took a fairly comfortable win. All in all, the tournament was a great step forward, as it proved that the Swedes can measure up to several European teams. There, however, are a lot of small details that we have to work with, before we can and will be a serious contender for the trophies in tournaments to come.
Training outdoors at Gärdet Posted by david on 2007-05-07 21:43:02
This weekend, there will be no training as the Swedish national team is playing in the Euro Bowl tournament in Luxembourg. Next training will be held outdoors at Gärdet (Subway station Gärdet), near the beach volley fields. We will play every Thursday at 18.30, and usually we’ll go to a restaurant afterwards. If the weather conditions are unfit for korfball we’ll cancel. For this reason it’s very important that Pierre, our coach, has your cell phone number.

The national team tryouts was a huge success Posted by david on 2007-04-18 22:53:18

Beginner’s night Posted by david on 2007-02-26 22:04:23
On Sunday February 25, we hosted a beginner’s night, with 21 participating players, including half a dozen new faces and some spectators to boot. This is the biggest crowd we’ve seen in this venue. Hopefully we’ll see some repeat performances, because there was a lot of talent in the group. The try-outs for the national team seem to be attracting new players. We do host beginner’s nights every now and then, but in fact every Sunday is beginner’s night. If you want to show up for practise or bring a friend, you’re more than welcome.

Stockholm squad stunned the Scots Posted by david on 2007-01-30 20:54:03
Stockholms traditional appearance in the Edinburgh international korfball tournament was a huge success. Seasoned veterans Robert, Lina, Maitham, Carola, David and Pierre, were joined by hungry rookies, Brionny, Ciara and Toby, all of whom scored in their first Edinburgh appearance. We started off by defeating Edinburgh University 3 with a 5 to 4 win, giving us the start we needed. The second game was the only debacle of the tournament, a 10-0 defeat to legendary Dutch team Paal Central, reinforced with some grade A British players. At this point it was obvious that the next game against Sheffield University, was pivotal for the whole tournament. Pierre scored two goals and the relentless Stockholm defence ground down the obviously frustrated Sheffield offence, allowing only a single goal. That win all but guaranteed the advancement to the top 8 knock out stage. All we had to do was get a point against underdogs Nottingham Uni. As you all know, you won’t find “a sure win” in the korfball thesaurus, and the English team put up quite a struggle. It was only in the final minutes of the game that Lina and Carola showed great poise, scoring two highly important goals, securing the necessary point. Advancing to the top 8 out of 20 clubs, meant playing the rest of the games against the best possible clubs. In the quarter final we lost to would-be runner ups Birmingham, and in the next game we faced the fiercly competitive Bosnian team, Maglaj. Despite having lots of opportunities, we didn’t manage to clutch that win, leaving us only one more game in the tournament, battling Paal Central for 7th place. As it turned out, the Dutch team proved to be too difficult once more, but this game was considerably closer. All in all, the tournament was a great success on and off the field, as good fun was had by everyone. Next year, the smart money is on Stockholm making an even bigger impact on this tournament.
New Year, same old Edinburgh tournament Posted by david on 2007-01-11 18:58:22
SKK:s adventures in the Edinburgh tournament are all but legendary. The last weekend of
January, we will pit our strength against the cream of British University teams, as well as some fiercely competitive Dutch and Bosnian teams. This year the team will consist of seasoned veterans Pierre, Emma, Robert, Lina, Maitham, Carola and David as well as relative newcomers Ciara, Toby and Briony. If all works out according to plan we will also have support in form of Stockholm alumni Stuart and Trudy. All in all, this might be a winning team, but without a doubt this team is a foolproof recipe for some good fun. Please follow our progress on this website as we will publish the results within mere weeks.

Impressive performance by SKK in Edinburgh Posted by David on 2006-02-15 00:12:02
Despite more than our share of logistical problems, most of the team had arrived in Edinburgh by Saturday morning. The competition in group B turned out to be razor sharp. After reaching a draw against Sheffield Uni, the best English team in the tournament, in the first match, the Stockholm squad took two consecutive wins against Lancaster and Edinburgh Old boys 2. Before the last game the situation was the following; if we managed to reach a draw or a win, we would win the group, and would be going on to the quarterfinals. Alas, we lost the match ending up in the fourth place with the same number of points as the first three squads. Following this game we defeated Nottingham Trent in a close game, lost against Birmingham in an equally close game, then finally faced Lancaster again. After lagging behind in most of the game we showed some Dutch power to turn the game around, ending the tournament on a bright note in 15th place. Even though we''ve finished better in previous tournaments, I daresay that we never played better as a team.
The tournament was won by our good friends in Edinburgh Old Boys. We actually defeated some of their players in our game against Old Boys 2. A big thanks goes out to all of those who participated. For those of you who didn''t join, let me tell you that you missed out on some great fun and a great learning experience. However there will be more tournaments, so be sure to get on the bandwagon next time around.
